David’s local experience includes the Brother’s and Sister’s choir, The Symphonic Band, the Phamily Band and a brief stint with the 7th Wonder and the Commodores. He once served as the performing arts coordinator for the Macon County Arts Council.
David Banks’ artistic experience is diverse. He has also been a promoter, booking agent, producer, manager and has worked both radio and television. David has even worked as a wrestling promoter with Dickie Stienborn and Fred Ward. David has played in many bands and choirs and has played many styles of music including Top 40 Dance, Blues, Jazz, Country, R & B and Gospel. David was the advisor/director of the Auburn University “Jamin” Gospel Choir for several years.
David’s on stage credits include; the Bar-Kays, Roy Ayres, The Yellow Jackets, Mercer “Duke” Ellington, BB King, Clarence Carter, Archie Bell and the Drells, Little Milton, The Commodores, Lionel Richie, Shirley Caesar, Ramsey Lewis, the Hawkins Family, Stanley Jordan, and The Staple Singers. Recent venues include; The Alabama Shakespear Festival, Jule Collins Smith Auditorium in Auburn, President Obama (Selma Bridge Crossing Commemoration), Tuskegee University Chapel,
The same conditions that created the Spirituals also created jazz. That is jazz, Spirituals and Gospel was born in the same cotton field. Spiritual and Gospel being primarily a vocal delivery and jazz being primarily instrumental.
Therefore, the combination Gospel + Jazz is nothing new. The first Gospel recording artist to achieve international acclaim, Rosetta Thorpe, was a Gospel/Jazz artist. Other popular Gospel/Jazz artists include Thomas Dorsey, Ben Tankard and “Allen and Allen”.
